Steve Finnemore, a specialist massage therapist, identified a number of ways in which people can stay fit and healthy during the chilly season.

He said that the warming and comforting foods people crave during winter do not have to be unhealthy.

"Using a good range of organic seasonal vegetables you can make meals packed with nutrients which help you stay healthy throughout winter," advised the expert.

Brisk walks are "ideal" for keeping fit and active, as long as people ensure they are dressed for it, Mr Finnemore added.

However, if the weather is particularly uninviting, exercise classes and other indoor means of keeping active provide further options for keeping fit.

It is also important to set aside some "down time" for yourself during the season, as winter can be a particularly stressful time for some, which the expert explains can lead to contracting winter bugs.
