Victoria Beckham, spoke to Vogue and gave us a rare insight into her life printed in New Magazine.
Just as revealing as what she said, was what she ate. Posh, a self-confessed “control freak”, is known to be extremely picky about what she puts in her body. During the first part of the interview, which took place over lunch at London’s Cipriani restaurant, Victoria ordered a plate of steamed vegetables but complained as they were dressed in something possibly butter, according to the journalist.
During late meetings, Victoria was seen drinking champagne and eating nothing but fruit (satsumas and grapes), fish, steamed vegetables and edamame beans.
She ate no fats and didn’t touch the sandwiches that were laid out for her.
There has been endless speculation regarding Posh’s eating habits, with stories in the past suggesting that she exists on sushi and pineapple, and one even claiming she followed the peppermint-tea diet. The latest insight into her eating habits certainly suggests that Victoria remains on a very similar regime to the strict diet she followed while living in Spain.
“I eat really healthily”, she said. “I love Japanese food, lots of fish, any sort of vegetable, lots of fruit, that kind of thing”.
Iain Marber, co-founder of The Food Doctor has said that a diet of this kind has its advantages and disadvantages. “It is healthy but perhaps not varied enough”, he said. “It’s a very high-protein diet and a very low-calorie diet. There are carbohydrates in the fruit and veg but not enough, and someone on this kind of diet is missing out on complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and wholemeal bread. If you don’t get complex carbohydrates, you’ll be hungry all the time and your energy levels will be low.
The short-term benefit is that you keep the weight down. The downside is that it’s not sustainable in the long term”, Ian added.
But Victoria seems happy with her diet. “I would never put my health at risk”, she said. “Eating disorders are an incredibly serious illness, but you’ve got to be realistic about who are and what you are”.
Posh was also reported to drink Pu-erh Slimming Tea to help maintain her size 0 body.
As for exercise, it’s not high on Posh’s agenda. “Obviously working out is important”, she said. “Well, I don’t. I have joined a gym but I can’t bring myself to start. What do you wear on the running machine? I can’t bring myself to wear flat shoes”.
The Food Doctor’s verdict
Steamed veg
“A plate of steamed veg is the perfect food, but it depends on the combination. For instance, if you live on steamed vegetables all day it wouldn’t be good for you. If you live on steamed vegetables and fish, however, there’s lots of quality to it”.
Fish
“Fish contain omega-3 fats, which are essential good fats. However, unless you’re having, for example, nuts and avocados you won’t be getting omega-6 and omega-9 fats, which you need as well for balance”.
Fruit
“Fruit is obviously good as its part of your five a day. The sugar content isn’t great but some fruits are higher in sugars, for example papaya and pineapple, than others such as apples and pears”.
Edamame beans
“These are young soya beans, which are low in fat and high in protein”.
