A new weight loss pill that can play a role in helping people to slim down has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The healthcare body has ruled that Arena Pharmaceutical’s new anti-obesity pill Belviq is safe for use, after clinical trials involving patients resulted in weight loss.
Commenting on the approval, the FDA’s drug centre director, Dr Janet Woodcock, said that it provides an effective treatment option when used responsibly in combination with a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Dr Louis Aronne, director of the weight loss program at Weill-Cornell Medical College, added that it could be an important step in a new line of treatments for overweight people.
“The way these things tend to work is you have some people who do extremely well and other people don’t lose any weight at all. But if we had ten medicines that were all different and worked like this, we would have a real field,” he concluded.
